Extracurricular Activities

Reading ListsAt Excelsior Academy, our vision and mission are the driving forces behind everything we do.  These ideals guide us in the development of our schoolwide learning expectations, and reflect the importance we place on school environment.  The following school activities are evidence of student implementation of these expectations:

Leaders Club – Members learn the basic skills of leadership and engage in peer mediations as well as various activities that help support student success.

Student Council – Students play an active role in the decision-making process by offering input and suggestions for school improvement.  Under the guidance of a staff member, these students engage in teamwork, examine issues, and make decisions according to Excelsior philosophy and student needs.

Student Mentors – Students are selected as mentors based upon:  their ability to be positive role models, on sound character, and on school achievement.  Student mentors provide support to students who may need assistance as they navigate the various aspects of school life.

Interscholastic and Intramural Sports – Athletics is an essential part of our educational program.  Students learn the basics in fitness, wellness, sports, teamwork, cooperation, and friendly competition.  Students are encouraged to join a team outside of the regular physical education program.  They learn that they will see playing time as they demonstrate academic and social responsibility throughout the week.

Reading ListsClubs – The importance of providing students with venues in which they may practice skills learned throughout their day cannot be understated.  Students have enrolled in many types of club activities during the past years including, but not limited to:  music, cooking, chess, art, games yearbook, drama, sports, karate, running, hiking, biking, mechanics, gardening, languages and the like.

Eagle Days - Once a month students and staff meet on the field and courts to engage in activities designed to build community, teamwork, enjoyment, and school spirit.

School Assemblies – On a weekly basis students and staff members convene in the courtyard for classroom presentations, school announcements, presentations of awards and achievement, guest speakers, and the like.

Community Service – Excelsior students are expected to volunteer their time and efforts towards helping their fellow San Diegans.  These on-campus and off-campus activities have consisted of food drives, letter-writing campaigns, disaster relief assistance, serving on soup lines, visiting with the elderly, collecting holiday gifts, and such.

Professional Conferences – Oftentimes, Excelsior staff members will be involved in professional conferences where they may ask students to assist them.  Students have demonstrated involvement in these conferences through panel discussions, booth work and presentations.

Vocational Programs – Many Excelsior students have taken part in vocational programs over the years.  Examples of some of the programs include, student apprenticeships, workshop employment, internships, and such.

Dual Enrollments – Throughout the years some students have elected to and have earned the opportunity to enroll in a class in another setting as they attend EA.  Some of these setting have included, private school classes, public school classes, work programs, community college classes, language institutes and the like.

Campus Work – Many students past and present have been involved in campus work.  Their efforts have appeared in all areas of campus life including the school store, office work, grounds work, classroom activities, and so on.
