Beginnings
In 1986, Frank and Nance Maguire had a dream of creating a school for children with learning differences.
In 1988, that dream became a reality when Excelsior Academy was established. Excelsior Academy students are intelligent individuals with learning differences and who, as underachievers, have not realized their potential.
Consequently, most of the students are described as having average to above average intelligence who have the opportunity to attend college if provided with the necessary skills.
The philosophy of Excelsior Academy springs first and foremost from the word excelsior which means ever upward. We had in mind the need for a school name that would act as a beacon, guiding community members upward in efforts to help students achieve success academically, physically, emotionally, and socially.
The Vision
All members of Excelsior Academy will be respectful and responsible individuals.
The Mission
To provide a safe and nurturing environment wherein students become literate, thinking, independent and productive citizens.
These guiding principles, known as The Excelsior Way, were created with input from staff, students, and families. The Excelsior Way is a way of trusting, coping, living, and learning that guides each individual in the school community.
The Reality
The school campus abounds with unique students who live and learn under the guidance of dedicated and committed Excelsior staff members. Wandering the grounds of Excelsior Academy our guests discover that student growth in all areas is the number one priority.
Guests who have spent time on our campus remark on the general attitude of tolerance and respect shown by students and staff. From the time students first enter our community, an effort is made to accept their differences and to help them feel welcome. Due to a small student population, staff members come to know all students, and EA students have an opportunity to form positive relationships with staff and students alike.
Overall, the environment at Excelsior Academy is one aspect that makes our school so unique. Another aspect of the school environment is its strong sense of community – often a topic of conversation for staff, students, parents, and guests.
Founded with a purpose, and guided by principles, Excelsior Academy is making a difference in the lives of children with learning differences by building confidence and character in a supportive learning environment.
