TRANSITION YEARS AT EXCELSIOR ACADEMY
Excelsior Academy, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, offers additional high school years to students who may not yet be ready for college, career, independence or work. Below are examples of transition year offerings:
PREPARATION SKILLS FOR THE WORLD OF WORK – Some students will need an extra year of transition in order to learn job skills such as: interviewing, completing applications, building resumes, time management, establishing a work ethic, relationship building, being productive, and such.
JOB/CAREER TRAINING – Once students have undergone preparation for entering the world of work, Excelsior will assist them in finding the appropriate training and jobsites. Students may choose to enroll in the Workability Program, the Student Apprenticeship Program, or an individualized job training at a job site of their choosing.
SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – As a National School of Character, Excelsior has an excellent social skills program for those who need a transition year to acquire advanced skills in: maturity, independence, responsibility, maintaining positive relationships, goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, and the like.
CAHSEE SUPPORT – Excelsior students have a 100% passing rate on the state high school exit exam for those who are required to take the test. For those students who have yet to pass the test, they will receive solid support during their transition year.
COLLEGE PREP – For those students who are not quite ready for college, they enroll in a transition year to: learn study skills, complete the college application process, complete additional coursework, become better prepared for college, fulfill community service requirements, and such. With this preparation, EA students achieve a relatively seamless transition to college.
DUAL ENROLLMENT – Students who would like to remain in a smaller environment while they attend ROP classes, trade school classes, apprenticeships or community college classes can engage in a dual enrollment with Excelsior Academy where they attend part time at EA and part time at the setting of their choice.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT – Support for students who need assistance with assignments, note-taking, writing skills, organization of materials, time management, and the like is available during a transition year.
LIFE PREPARATION SKILLS – For those students who would like to sharpen their skills in independent living, they may choose from a wide variety of skill-building activities during the transition years such as: mobility training, basic cooking, leisure time activities, building positive relationships, and self-advocacy activities.
COMMUNITY SERVICE – Students who want to earn credits for community service, complete volunteer work, or engage in productive, thoughtful activities may enroll in a transition year to be a mentor, tutor, office assistant, maintenance worker or perhaps a student coach in athletics.
Whatever the needs of the student, Excelsior staff members will design a program tailored specifically to meet those needs for one or more transition years.
